Have you ever read a novel or story or memoir and thought, “I have just as interesting a story to tell so perhaps I could write a book too?” Have you tried writing a story or memoir of your life experience and thought, “I wonder if this is the right way to go about this?”
What does it take to write and publish your story, either as fiction or creative non-fiction (eg: a memoir)? Is it all about inspiration, talent, language ability, luck or something else? Is it possible to study creative writing the way you do other creative arts such as painting or music?
Hong Kong English-language author and creative writing instructor Xu Xi will conduct an introductory workshop to help you get started. If you’ve tried your hand at writing, or thought about doing so, this will give you some tools to take your writing to the next step. You will be introduced to the concept of “reading like a writer” and some basics of narrative structure to help you think like a writer. She will also offer some advice of ways to develop your interest as a writer. Note: The focus of this workshop is on prose – fiction & creative non fiction – and will not include poetry.
There is a reading assignment to be completed BEFORE the session that all registrants will receive.
Xu Xi is the author of eight books of fiction and nonfiction, most recently a novel Habit of a Foreign Sky, which was a finalist for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize. Her new story collection, Access: Thirteen Tales, will be published in November. She has also edited several anthologies of Hong Kong writing in English, including Fifty-Fifty: New Hong Kong Writing. The author is a Chinese-Indonesian native of Hong Kong and holds a MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) in fiction writing from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is the Writer-in-Residence at City University of Hong Kong’s Department of English where she established and directs the first, low-residency MFA in creative writing in Asia, the only one in the world that specialises in Asian writing in English.
